looking for a loss - negative calorie foods

so i read a little article on yahoo a few weeks ago about negative calorie foods. the idea was that certain foods you eat take more calories to be ingested than they actually contain. My new lover, grapefruit, is one of them, celery, cabbage, are some others. I think this is where the kooky cabbage and grapefruit diets come from. I AM NOT LOOKING FOR AN EASY FIX. But, I like this idea of incorporating some of these foods into my eating. Here’s a list I found. Mainly, it all comes down to eating more fruits and veggies, right? We all know that.

Anyway, have been doing really well, but yesterday just ate too much and now facing weigh ins this week and hoping I can bring it down. I’m still feeling in munchy mood today so I HAVE to watch the grazing. I am torn between not eating enough for nursing the baby and eating too much and feeding my blubber!

Also, tried to go running this morning but is is one giant piece of ice outside. May go to the gym this morning but was trying to wait till Eli had his next round of shots (on Monday) before I take him to day care there. Hard to exercise in this weather!!!Ok, stop the excuses. Will go do some yoga before I take Austin to school. Have a great day!

Great list, good thing to keep in mind.

Don’t forget that you burn like 1000 calories a day breast feeding! That should help a lot!

I have my doubts about the fruits portion of the list. Well, I doubt that there are ‘free’ foods to start with, but fruits in particular is a dangerous proposition when trying to lose weight. Obviously, an apple is better than a donought, no argument there, but they are sweets and will derail your diet if you don’t watch them. I know, because I had to sub the fruits I was devouring as snacks with the veggies. believe it or not, but that single substitute of 4 fruits a day for a tray of celery sticks and radishes was what finally triggered the weight loss for me.

That is so awsome! I knew that those foods were really good for you, but never knew they could be “negative calories”. Had a question though? Would you have to eat them raw -or if you were to eat them (say spinach) out of a can -would it be the same???

Thanks for the info Debbie especially since I have my soup in the slowcooker with the main ingredients being cabbage and carrots.
Now I’m really looking forward to it.

I hope you got your yoga in today.
    NO EXCUSES!

Remember you ALWAYS feel better when you get it in and lousy when you don’t.

    Have a great evening
    Lori
PS I can’t wait for Spring!

Thanks so much Deb! I knew about some of these but then others surprised me…like raspberries and cauliflower…

Have I mentioned lately how good it is to have you back on the team? Missed ya!

Those are some great fruit and veggie choices. If you’re one to make home made fruit smoothies, adding cabbage and cucumber doesn’t even change the taste…. I try to put cuc’s in my smoothie all the time. Sometimes I layer them in my sandwiches too. I also have a cabbage soup recipe that incorporates a lot of those veggies, I’ll pull it out, havent made it in a while… it was a weight watchers recipe, I’ll post with my recipes b4 end of week.
Thanks for the printed list….. I copies and pasted to add to my next grocery order….
Oh to all of you on cholesterol meds…. don’t eat the grapefruit. It adversly affects your meds…. (just an FYI, cuz it affects me :-)

Negative calorie, but nutrient rich - a winning combination! Love it. When you feed your baby high density quality nutritious foods I think you will not have to eat a lot. You eat well. Ahhh if more children in this world ate well including a diet rich in EFAs, I think we could have one brilliant generation. ;)

    Happy munching :)

I love grapefruit too. Thanks for the list though, it is very helpful. hope your weigh in goes well. And smart thinking about the round of shots, lets get the baby a lil stronger before we go share him to a bunch of other kids. How about some recent pic of him and you huh? Have a good day and be careful if you do the stairs.

Thank you for the list! I did not know some of those foods were negative calorie foods… like beets for instance. Learn something new every day. :)

No excuses. Forget outside. You got an mp3 player? I suggest a little dancing. Hold my nephew and dance with him. He told me he would love that…

    Signed,
    Bossy Butt
    with a HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG of course

Very interesting. Can’t hurt to give it a try. Those are all healthy choices, can’t go wrong with fruits and veggies. ;) Thanks for the list. I printed it out for future reference. Good Luck for your weigh in! :D

It’s TOUGH to diet when you’re nursing! In my expert opinion (LOL!) ANY weight lost while nursing is an amazing accomplishment! ;) Awesome job girl! :D

I have to say though, I read an article a while back “debunking” the negative calorie food “myth”. Your body just doesn’t use many calories to digest food because it’s so efficient at it by our ages (not babies). I think it may burn like 1/2 a calorie an hour digesting food or something. At least, that’s what I read! There’s always conflicting information out there, so who knows?? Anyway, it’s all really healthy stuff on your list, so give it a shot. It definitely can’t hurt! ;)

  17. 8crazyemotions @ January 30th, 2009

    That’s great! I’m stealing your list! lol…
I have heard that some foods were like that… I didn’t know which ones though. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for sharing this list! One more reason to incorporate more fruits and veggies to my diet!!
Ok….I highly recommend workout DVD’s for this kind of weather…I have found them to be a HUGE help!! I personally love the Biggest Loser series and Leslie Sansone…because as you know, I was blessed with 2 left feet, not to mention that I have no grace or coordination!

  19. khmerbeauty @ January 30th, 2009

I love the list Debbie!!! Thanks hon! Ok, so now I have to go catch up on the 50 emails the tribe has out for me. :)
