about Wii Fit!!!

Have you all seen the article on Yahoo yet? The new Wii Fit game calls people, and most importantly kids, FAT - UGH! Check out this link so that you can be informed consumers. Apparently the game uses the BMI of the player to determine a fitness level and then labels people according to it’s numbers. Well, as all know that BMI is only so useful of a tool for anyone, but for kids to get labeled in such a way is just awful and from a game! There are so many body types and structures that it is unfair to make these sweeping statements taht could really effect the way a person sees him or her self. I am all for a game that finally is one of motion rather than inactivity - we can all use that, but come on Nintendo does anorexia/bulimia really need our help in telling people they are not right the way they are. UGH!!!

Anyway, here’s the link:

I just read the article. That is completely ridiculous! I don’t know what brainiac at Nintendo thought of this one but they are obviously not thinking about what this is going to do to young kids/teens. Parents are going to buy this game for their kids thinking it will be good for them to get exercise while playing a game all the while not realizing that their kid could be called fat. It is just crazy.

Good point. “Fat” is loaded with negative stereotypes. But what would you say, honestly, giving an assessment to an overweight kid?

I read that Wii Fit lets you set up weight loss goals, fitness level, etc… You gotta start someplace.

Wow, I really think this could have a negative effect on kids. Especially ones with low self esteem anyways. Parents do need to be aware, so they can work with it. Thanks for the heads up!

That is so awful! As a large child growing up those labels are NEVER helpful. Still dealing sometimes with all the negativity. Thanks for posting and being a voice for children who need encouragement. I PERSONALLY do not even like Dance, Dance Revolution because it is somewhat negative too.

    Thanks so much Debbie *hugs*

That’s terrible. They could have created such a positive experience that makes kids want to be active and not even realize how active they are. Some people, who make a lot of money, really need to research a lot better….not even research, just use common sense and sensitivity.
